Gooseberry Bush

A compact, self-fertile fruiting shrub closely related to currant, producing tart-to-sweet berries that shine in pies, preserves, and fresh eating alike.

Gooseberry Bush

Gooseberry shares much of currant's easy-care profile - self-fertile, shade-tolerant, and compact enough for smaller properties - while offering a distinctly different fruit. Depending on the variety and ripeness at harvest, gooseberries range from sharply tart to genuinely sweet, giving real flexibility for how you use them.

Like currant, gooseberry tolerates more shade than most fruiting shrubs, making it a strong option for the partially shaded parts of a property that other plants underperform in. The thorny stems on some varieties are worth knowing about, but they also make the plant an effective, productive hedge or barrier planting.

Common questions

Before you plant.

  • Do I need a second plant? No. Gooseberry is self-fertile and will produce fruit on its own.
  • Is it thorny? Some varieties are, which is worth considering for placement near walkways, though it also makes an effective hedge.
  • How much shade can it handle?More than most fruiting shrubs - it genuinely tolerates and often prefers partial shade.
  • When is the fruit ready? It depends on your taste - pick earlier for a tart cooking berry, or let it ripen further for a sweeter, fresh-eating fruit.
  • When do gooseberries ripen?Early summer, usually June to early July in Zone 7.
  • Do I need gloves to pick them? For thorny varieties, yes. Opening up the bush with pruning helps a lot.

    Gooseberries

    Tart or sweet,
    your choice at harvest.

Gooseberry is a close cousin of the currant, with the same shade tolerance and compact size, but larger single berries instead of clusters.

Picked green, gooseberries are sharply tart and perfect for pies, fools and chutneys. Left to ripen, many varieties turn soft and sweet enough to eat by the handful.

It is self-fertile, early to fruit and one of the easiest shrubs for a partly shaded bed.

What to know before you buy

Like currants, gooseberries are Ribes, and a few states restrict them. We check your state before shipping.

Give them morning sun and afternoon shade, with steady moisture and mulch.

Prune in winter to open the center of the bush. Airflow helps prevent mildew, and it makes picking around the thorns easier.

Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart. Most reach full bearing in about three years.
